»A welcome ceremony awaited Marlon back at Cheyne Walk, including a musical tribe of mystics from Bangladesh. They chanted as the baby was brought into the house, dropping rice and rose petals from the oak balustrade. Robert Fraser was there with a crib hand-painted in psychedelic colors. "Everybody was slashing me when I had Marlon," Anita told Victoria Balfour, "saying, "You must be crazy to have children."" They criticized everything, even the milk bottles she used to feed him.
Keith had an easier time. "Keith would pick him up from his crib and whisper to him about all the things they would do together one day once he got a little bigger. 'You and me baby..... We've got the whole world together. We don't need nobody else." But Keith's time with the baby was cut short. He was needed in LA with the rest of the band to record their new album, Let It Bleed. And the Stones' American tour-their first in over three years-was due to start on November 7, 1969. A fragile newborn couldn't join him on the road. Keith would have to leave his lady at home. Keith hated abandoning Anita at this hour. They'd been doing so well together, and last year's heartbreak seemed forgotten and resolved. Now his heart broke again over the looming departure, and he poured all that longing into writing "Wild Horses." "I wrote this song because I was doing good at home with my old lady," he would tell Stanley Booth in December 1969. "I wrote it like a love song."
Keith ignored the troops of groupies that trailed him that tour. "Whenever we got to a hotel, he was calling her," confirmed Sam Cutler. "He desperately missed Anita. He pined for her.... He was never unfaithful to her. I was with him every minute of the day of the 1969 tour and he was never with any other women. He was a one-woman-man - a great romantic and a gentleman."«
