"in the navajo language the word hogan means "home place." the term also has come to refer to a collection of buildings, all of which share essential characteristics: they are single‑room, roughly circular structures, heated by a central floor fireplace or wood‑burning stove with a hole in the roof for a stovepipe; the door always faces east, toward the rising sun, and they are generally built by the occupants. the architectural origins of the hogan are bound up in mythology. the building forms were originally divine gift to the dineh, the "people," as the navajo call themselves."
